October Horoscopes

It's the time of year when the veil between the worlds is at its thinnest -- when we revel in the mysteries of life, death, and what it all means. In the park where I walk my dog, three giant oak trees scatter acorns all over the ground. I notice how the squirrels scurry around to gather the nuts. Cycles of nature are miraculous, aren't they? How acorns fall right before winter begins, providing nourishment for animals as they head into a colder season.

We start October on the heels of six retrograde cycles. Mercury stations direct on October 2, Pluto on the 8th, and Saturn on the 22nd. These cycles can feel like autumn - when we pull inward and gather our nuts and seeds. We ask ourselves questions -- what are my priorities? What past decisions would I make differently today? How can I show up in healthier ways in the relationships in my life?

As Mercury stations direct, we are ready to take action and move forward. The Aries Full Moon on October 9 is like a director calling "Action!" It offers a burst of energy awakening dormant potential for our love, career, and home life. This lunation sets the stage for eclipse season, which starts on October 25 with the Scorpio solar eclipse.

Right after the Full Moon, Mercury enters Libra on October 10. We long to be peacemakers but must find ways to unify polarities. Let's hope this spirit prevails as we head toward November 8.

On October 11, Mars forms a square aspect to Neptune, clouding our vision about what's real and true. This transit could feel like walking through a fog, knowing we want to reach our destinations but can't see the full path ahead—just the next right move. We want to be careful about how we view the circumstances of our lives. Are we looking through the lens of disappointment, or are we celebrating the gifts? Even challenging circumstances have gifts to offer. We want to envision our ideal scenarios but not grow depressed about what hasn't come to be. We're always manifesting whether we know it or not; just have faith that things are working out. One way this transit could manifest is not knowing what to believe. If you hear something that sounds suspect, ask questions. Don't take things at face value.

On October 22, the Sun meets Venus in Libra. Venus and the Sun dance close together throughout the month. Making this a time when we feel a little more flirtatious and where love and romance feel more intriguing, especially if you're single, you might notice playful banter and more dwelling on the possibilities of what could be.

If you're in a relationship, there might be some frustration leading up to this transit. Especially if you feel like you're not truly connecting with your partner, be intentional about scheduling date nights, clearing time in your calendar to have thoughtful conversations, and being together.

The Sun and Venus both enter Scorpio on October 23, and we move away from the social, friendly vibe of Libra season and move more into inquiry and magic. It is when mysteries are revealed, and we search our hearts for answers to some of the more complicated situations. Furthermore, the end of October ushers us into eclipse season, those two weeks between a solar eclipse on October 25 and the lunar one on November 8. Eclipses represent big turning points when the ground beneath the shakes reveals cracks in our foundation that need to be healed, allowing truth to rise to the surface and fast-forwarding us on the trajectory of our lives. It's no time to delay or hesitate. We have to act on behalf of our souls' urging.

Eclipses are so powerful because they involve the Sun, which is symbolic of the nature of the will, the Moon, symbolic of the subconscious self, and the north and south nodes, symbolic of the path of destiny. When we have these three things aligning in just the right ways with the earth, we have all the right ingredients for seismic change, and in fact, there's a greater likelihood of earthquakes and tsunamis during eclipse times too. As you think about this, hold the perspective that you are complete just as you are and that there is nothing about you that needs to be fixed. We return to a spirit of wholeness in loving the parts of ourselves with which we struggle. We can sense it, but we are never not whole. We are never broken. We are like bamboo. We bend.

In many of my recent sessions, I've heard from people who are exhausted. Life has been hard here on this planet. Scorpio season is a time for transformation. And I know this word has become and I know we have desensitized from this word a little bit just because the concept is so big. Let me spell out what it means to me.

Transformation is changing consciousness and sometimes even changing our physical experience and expression. Transformation means we have the same essence and innate spirit, but how we express that spirit and what possibilities open up in our lives. It's all different. Transformation means we reinvent ourselves and we open our minds. We expand our sense of wonder about what else we could be. On a collective level, transformation means we are dismantling old structures and going through the discomfort of the in-between. Transition is always uncomfortable for our egos.

That's where the magic happens. In the discomfort in the disquiet in the dark. Unknown of change. We journey into that territory at the end of this month when Jupiter re-enters Pisces on the 27th and Mercury enters Scorpio on the 29th. These two water signs bring us deep into the spiritual realm bring us deep these two water signs. Stir up big feelings, and feelings give us the energy necessary for change. So don't suppress those feelings or look for an escape. Go into them and let them inform you of the steps you need to take to live a more heart-centered life.

Finally, Mars stations retrograde on October 29, bringing us into a time when we could feel as if we have one foot on the gas pedal and one on the brake. With Mars in Gemini, we want to argue a point, clarify our ideas, and rant on social media. Mars retrograde stirs up fuel for some of this debate. It’s important to have outlets for our frustrations and stressors while we’re moving through this cycle. Be willing to sit back and observe, listen, and breathe before responding to challenges.

ARIES (MARCH 21 - APRIL 19):

In Southern California, we're waiting for rain, and as I write your horoscope, I can feel the humidity in the air. Rain was in the forecast, but we've only felt misty drizzles—no deluge. Think of it as a metaphor for Libra season. What long-anticipated shifts are you awaiting? What needs to be washed away in your life? As the Sun moves through your opposite sign until October 23, your best course of action is to sit still and trust.

Mercury goes direct on October 2, and over the past three weeks, you've had your share of relationship mishaps, plot twists, and communication delays. We have only a few short weeks before your ruling planet Mars stations retrograde on October 29. So, try not to let angry words fester inside, unspoken.

The Full Moon in your sign on October 9 highlights partnerships, making this a theme for the month. With so many shifting currents in your life, you could face decisions in which there don't seem to be real, clear answers. Take space if you need to, and take five deep breaths before speaking in the heat of an argument.

Professionally, seek collaborators to help you fulfill your mission. You're rising to a new peak in your career and learning valuable lessons in consensus leadership. The Scorpio New Moon on October 25 helps you recognize how you might limit yourself by being critical or dwelling on what you don't have rather than appreciating what you do. Stay grateful and open to surprises.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20):

Venus shines in your sign until October 23, making this a month to celebrate all the best aspects of being a human and having a body. Pleasure is an underrated spiritual concept for many, but not for you. Be grounded in the five senses to appreciate your connection to the natural world, and allow yourself to slow down and enjoy sensual experiences. The Full Moon on October 9 highlights dreams, creativity, and wonder. If you feel low, turn to music. Confused? Make art. Bewildered? Dance it out.

Your daily habits and routines help make your dreams possible. At the beginning of the month, assess how you could feel more organized and in charge of your day-to-day life. You could be asked to let something go as Mars challenges Neptune on October 11, but you're only freeing yourself for deepening commitments on October 13.

Venus and the Sun dance throughout the month, and both enter Scorpio on October 23. Remember, forgiveness can soften rough edges and heal heartbreak. The lure of past relationships may rekindle a sense of comfort and safety. At the same time, you're on a path leading forward to a new destination. Stay willing to make changes if necessary, and speak from your heart without holding back.

In love, focus more on strengthening partnerships, especially after the Sun enters Scorpio on October 23. Jupiter slides back into Pisces on October 27, and it opens the waterworks of feeling to create new pathways for healing, especially in your friendships.

Gemini (May 20 – June 20):

Passion-oriented Mars moves through your sign this month, helping you align to your goals and reach the top. Even if you don't have a clear vision for the path ahead, you know what you don't want and what isn't working for you. Mars is slowing down all month, and stations retrograde on October 29. On the other hand, you are moving out of Mercury retrograde on October 2 and have no intention of standing still. Soar to new heights, but do so with grace.

Romance is a highlight throughout the month as Venus and the Sun dance close to one another. They're both in favorable Libra, a fellow air sign, until October 23, sparking flames with your partner or inspiring a new connection. The Full Moon on October 9 draws you into a new chapter of love. Are you ready to take a leap of faith? Luck is on your side.

This month is a social one for gathering with like-minded friends. Your mind is highly functioning, so you might collaborate with others to complete projects, brainstorm new ideas, or inspire one another to become more involved in a cause. We're moving out of Mercury retrograde on October 2, but your ruling planet is still going slow. Do you feel safe enough to be at peace in stillness? As the Sun enters Scorpio on October 23, balance is your keyword. Scorpio season is intense this year, and you want to move forward with integrity, prioritize wholeness, and strive for inner peace.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22):

Your sign's symbol is the crab, and it's a helpful metaphor as you navigate the astrological currents this month. Crabs have strong exoskeletons for protection, and their flat bodies allow them to slide under rocks or into crevices for safety. Likewise, your need for security has led you to be prepared and adaptable. You might not have control over what's happening in the outside world, but you can count on your intuition for guidance and your home to be a haven of protection. With the Sun moving through Libra until October 23, trust your instincts and think of how your home can be even more of a safe shelter.

The Full Moon on October 9 draws your attention toward your career and public life. With Mars going retrograde on October 29, you might question some of your professional goals, but this is no time to give up. Aim your focus at your desired destination; know this is a testing time. Any self-doubt will dissipate with perseverance. Collaborate with others and build a team for support. You are climbing toward a new career peak, but it's a slow climb rather than a quick sprint.

For two weeks, your mind stretches further into the past to uncover what was lost in childhood. Then, it shifts to the present to deepen your understanding of life's philosophical questions. Finally, it piques your curiosity about the future to imagine what's possible.

Libra (September 22 – October 22):

Messenger Mercury made its retrograde journey in your sign last month, and it finally starts to move forward again on October 2. Your new solar year begins with self-reflection and, perhaps, a commitment to prioritizing your well-being. Have you cast your heartstrings out to too many people, places, and things? It's time to pull them back and replenish your reserves of energy. It's your season, after all.

Steadfast Saturn is moving through your sector of playful creativity, making this a time to prioritize a step-by-step approach to artistic endeavors and other forms of self-expression. Life is full of surprises; maintain a curious mindset so you can catch those out-of-the-blue opportunities when they come.

Mercury goes direct on October 2, pulling you into the present. You've had time to explore aspects of your early life, and maybe you've reconnected with people who played roles in shaping who you've become.

Then, on October 23, the Sun and Venus enter your sign, signaling the start of your season. As a Scorpio, you thrive in darker spaces, so try practicing surrender as the Sun shines its spotlight on you. If others don't find the same intrigue in diving deep, don't let them stop you.

If you have any unclear entanglements, settle them early in the month. Questions rise to the surface: What's true? By the time of the Scorpio Solar Eclipse on October 25, you will be ready to take more significant steps to implement change.

On October 29, Mars goes retrograde in your opposite sign, Gemini, allowing you to press the rewind button and review past relationships. Remember, anger is productive if we employ it to help us set and assert our boundaries. It quickly becomes toxic if we allow it to stagnate and stew.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)

As we move closer to winter, it's natural to think back to warmer days and past seasons. Lean into that inclination now. Think about people-pleasing patterns that have shown up in your career and re-evaluate how you relate with coworkers. Life circumstances often repeat themselves, and each time they do, you have an opportunity to make wiser choices.

It is likely this lunation highlights your gifts and resources and emphasizes how you use these resources in your deep, internal, or relational work. On October 11, Mars in Gemini squares Neptune in Pisces. This aspect activates your relationships with yourself and your family and can bring some Neptunian fogginess to your vision. It can be easy for you to mistrust yourself and your instincts under this transit. The fog will pass.

On October 25, we have the Scorpio Eclipse or New Moon in Scorpio. The South Node is in Scorpio, highlighting what we collectively need to purge. On a personal level, this eclipse asks you to question your beliefs, religious practices, and general philosophies. It is time for you to free yourself from any oppressive systems that have existed since your childhood that limit your evolution of self. This eclipse asks you to own your freedom and express your mystical visions. You will see anything that is limiting you in your life. Remember, as a water sign, that you flow. Just as you flow, you can let go.
